Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication report a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
