No fewer than 13 individuals perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
